Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

When we experience a traumatic event, our body goes into a stress response of fight or flight. The thoughts, feelings, body sensations, sights, and even smells that were present during the trauma can become trapped in our brain and nervous system. This can cause various emotional and physical symptoms that can then influence our behavior in unhealthy ways. EMDR is an evidence-based treatment that uses bilateral stimulation (eye movement, tapping, or sounds) to activate the Adaptive Information Processing center in the brain so we can reprocess the traumatic event and gain new perspectives, insights, and beliefs about ourselves in relation to the trauma. This process aims to reduce the emotional distress associated with the past trauma which naturally leads to improved mood and healthier behavior.

We may never forget what happened to us in the past. The idea isn’t to forget the trauma, but rather, to be able to reach a place where we can look back at the trauma with less emotional pain. EMDR therapy can be a helpful piece in the healing journey. Our past affects our present and will continue to impact our future unless we seek supportive treatment.

You are more than what’s happened to you. Therapy can help you recognize this truth.
